
Over the last decade there has been a clear and pronounced shift
in marketing dollars toward motor sport sponsorship. In 1997 there
where more than 250 companies, including 70 of the Fortune 500 putting
up over a quarter of a billion dollars for the privilege of sponsoring
stock car racing. Driving this movement is a strong emotional bond
existing between fans and the corporate sponsors that support stock
car racing. Resulting in a more positive outlook consumers have toward
companies that sponsor stock car racing compared to other companies
that do not. In 1994, Performance Research, a sports marketing research
firm in Newport, Rhode Island, published a report called RaceStat.
The RaceStat study revealed two important facts. First, stock car
racing fans are very aware of who sponsors their sport, and second,
they have a strong tendency to purchase the products of the sponsoring
companies. With the numbers much higher today, many will argue that
race team sponsorship is the one last marketing bargain available
in sports.
